'Winterreise' consists of 24 settings of poems by Wilhelm Müller, composed in two groups in 1827. Here Schubert raises the importance of the pianist to a role equal to that of the singer, with rhythms that constantly evoke the mood of the words. Eve and Gould, having worked together for a number of years now, gave an electrifying, totally absorbing performance. I don't think I have ever been in so quiet an audience, so intense was their involvement.
